Route overview

This longer but relatively low-ascent outing visits two of the gentler Cairngorm Munros. Starting from Auchallater, the route follows a scenic glen track past Loch Callater before climbing onto an expansive, high-altitude plateau. The return circuit skirts the dramatic rim of Coire Kander, offering a satisfying and varied day in a quieter corner of the eastern Highlands.

Terrain and underfoot

The approach and return use well-defined landrover tracks and paths along Glen Callater. However, the upper glen section of Jock's Road is notoriously boggy and difficult to trace. Once on the high plateau, the terrain becomes pathless, exposed, and featureless, demanding competent navigation skills in poor visibility. The climb out of the glen and the descent from the plateau are short but steep.
