Route overview

This monumental expedition traverses the high western plateau of the Cairngorms, taking in four magnificent Munros including the dramatic Devil's Point and the massive bulk of Braeriach. Starting from the Sugar Bowl, the route journeys through the iconic Lairig Ghru pass before ascending to a vast, elevated world of deep corries, sheer cliffs, and remote arctic-alpine tundra.

Terrain and underfoot

Underfoot conditions vary from well-maintained glen paths to exceptionally rough, trackless boulder fields, most notably in the Chalamain Gap and on the high summits. The plateau sections feature vast, featureless terrain requiring expert navigation in poor visibility. While the walking is mostly non-technical, the sheer scale, steep ascents, and proximity to vertical cliff edges demand high endurance and mountain competence. The River Dee crossing near Corrour Bothy can be challenging.
