Stob Dubh (Buachaille Etive Beag)

Route overview

This classic Glen Coe outing climbs two Munros via a well-engineered path, offering an exceptionally rewarding day for a relatively modest physical investment. Positioned between two deep valleys, the ridge of Stob Dubh and the rocky peak of Stob Coire Raineach provide spectacular, airy vantage points over the surrounding peaks and down to Glen Etive.

Terrain and underfoot

The approach uses a high-quality, constructed stone path ascending steeply to the central col. From here, the route to Stob Dubh follows a clear, narrowing ridge with some rocky steps but no technical scrambling. The ascent of Stob Coire Raineach is rougher, steeper, and looser underfoot with multiple braided paths. Good navigation is required in poor visibility to avoid the steep, craggy western flanks when descending back to the col.
