Route overview
This classic Torridon circuit climbs Sgòrr Ruadh from Achnashellach, offering an excellent introduction to the region's sandstone and quartzite peaks. The route winds through the scenic Coire Làir, ascending past lochans to a rugged summit with superb views of Fuar Tholl and the wider Coulin Forest. The return journey completes a satisfying loop via a steep descent and a high-quality stalkers' path.
Terrain and underfoot
The route begins on excellent forestry tracks and stalkers' paths, but requires crossing the River Làir, which can become impassable during spate. Higher up, the terrain transitions to a pathless, complex rocky plateau requiring careful navigation. The descent along the northwest ridge involves negotiating quartzite boulder fields and a short section of easy scrambling, followed by a very steep, grassy descent back into the glen.
