Sgòrr Dhearg (Beinn a' Bheithir)

Route overview

This classic horseshoe from Ballachulish climbs the dramatic twin Munros of Beinn a' Bheithir. Ascending via the rocky crest of Schoolhouse Ridge, the route traverses high, narrow ridges with spectacular views over Loch Leven and Glen Coe. After visiting both Sgòrr Dhearg and Sgòrr Dhònuill, a descent through Gleann a' Chaolais completes a superb, varied mountain day.

Terrain and underfoot

The route features a mix of terrain, starting with a steep, sustained climb on a rocky ridge that requires some basic scrambling. Higher up, the walking is excellent along narrow, grassy, and stony ridges. The descent from the central bealach is initially boggy and pathless in places, before joining clearer forest tracks and a paved roadside path back to the start.
