This classic Glen Coe traverse is widely regarded as the most challenging and celebrated ridge walk on the Scottish mainland. Linking two Munros, Meall Dearg and Sg"orr nam Fiannaidh, the route offers sustained, highly exposed scrambling in a spectacular mountain setting. It is a serious undertaking requiring excellent scrambling ability, a steady head for heights, and sound mountain judgment.
Terrain and underfoot
The route begins with a very steep, eroded ascent to Am Bodach. The traverse itself features sustained Grade 2 scrambling over extremely exposed rocky pinnacles, chimneys, and slabs, which become highly treacherous when wet. Escape routes are non-existent once committed. Descent is via a steep, stony path heading west towards the Pap of Glencoe; the notoriously dangerous Clachaig Gully must be avoided.

Route overview
This short but steep route approaches Meall Dearg, the central peak of the famous Aonach Eagach ridge, from the quieter northern side. Starting near Caolasnacon, the walk ascends through Gleann a' Chaolais to a high col before climbing the mountain's northern nose. It offers a direct, non-scrambling alternative to reach this iconic summit, with superb views of the pinnacles.
Terrain and underfoot
The underfoot conditions are rough and persistently boggy, particularly along the glen floor and the initial climb from the burn crossing. The path is often faint or indistinct, requiring basic navigation skills. The final ascent from the col to the summit ridge is sustained and very steep, following a line of old fence posts over grassy and rocky ground, though it avoids any technical scrambling.
