ScramblingGrade details
Grades describe the named technical sections, not every metre of the route.
Route overview
This demanding expedition explores the wild heart of the Knoydart peninsula, ascending two remote Munros from the coastal settlement of Inverie. The route traverses the rugged ridges of Meall Buidhe and Luinne Bheinn, offering exceptional coastal and mountain views. It is a long, committing day out requiring strong navigation and endurance, returning via the scenic Mam Barrisdale pass.
Terrain and underfoot
The terrain is exceptionally rough and varied. It features a steep, pathless initial ascent through summer bracken, followed by rocky, complex ridges with sections of simple scrambling. The descent from Luinne Bheinn is steep and pathless over boggy ground. The long return glen path is notoriously waterlogged and boggy in places, with several burn crossings that can become difficult or impassable when water levels are high.

Inverie and the Mallaig ferry
The usual visitor approach is the Mallaig to Inverie passenger ferry. Park in East Bay or West Bay council parking in Mallaig before taking the ferry. Allow extra time in summer and check the signs for charges and permission to leave your car for the full trip.
A large surfaced mainland car park at Mallaig West Bay, west of the railway. The ferry leaves separately from the harbour.
- Ferry planning
- Book your outward and return sailings before planning the hill day. The ferry landing and the walking route start are separate locations.
