This classic Torridon outing climbs the striking red peak of Maol Chean-dearg from the south. Starting with an enjoyable approach through scenic Glen Carron, the route passes a historic bothy before ascending a well-graded stalkers' path. The final climb transitions into rugged, rocky terrain, rewarding walkers with exceptional views of the surrounding wilderness.
Terrain and underfoot
Underfoot conditions are excellent initially, following a well-maintained glen track and a clear, stony zig-zag path up to the high pass. The upper mountain is much rougher, requiring a steep ascent over loose quartzite scree and a final section across sandstone boulders. Navigation is straightforward in clear weather, though rocky ledges near the summit plateau require care in poor visibility.
