Route overview
This classic circular route explores one of the Cairngorms' most celebrated peaks. Starting from Glen Muick, the trail climbs past the dramatic northern corrie of Lochnagar before traversing the high plateau to the rocky summit of Cac Càrn Beag. The descent follows the scenic Glas Allt past waterfalls to the shores of Loch Muick, offering a varied and rewarding day.
Terrain and underfoot
Underfoot, the route utilizes well-maintained estate tracks and stone-pitched mountain paths. The ascent up the Ladder involves a steep climb through a boulder field, though a clear path eases the way. The high plateau requires careful navigation in poor visibility, particularly near the sheer cliffs of the northern corrie. The descent alongside the Glas Allt is steep but stepped, returning via a flat lochside track.
