This classic, high-altitude circuit from the Linn of Dee explores the southern heart of the Cairngorms. The route ascends the scenic ridge of Sron Riach to reach the vast, arctic-like plateau of Ben Macdui, the UK's second-highest peak. A high-level traverse leads over the boulder-strewn crest of Derry Cairngorm, offering a rewarding and varied day out through ancient pinewoods and wild, elevated terrain.
Terrain and underfoot
The route follows excellent landrover tracks and clear forest paths through Glen Lui before transitioning to rougher mountain trails. The ascent of Sron Riach is steady but steep in places, leading to an expansive, featureless plateau where navigation is highly demanding in poor visibility. Underfoot terrain on Derry Cairngorm is exceptionally rough, requiring care over extensive, awkward boulder fields. A burn crossing in upper Glen Luibeg can become difficult or impassable during periods of heavy rain.

Route overview
A long and classic Cairngorms circuit exploring two contrasting Munros. The route begins with an easy approach through the pinewoods of Glen Lui before climbing over the stony dome of Derry Cairngorm. It then traverses to the high, sandy plateau of Beinn Mheadhoin, famous for its giant granite tors, before returning via the deep trench of Glen Derry.
Terrain and underfoot
Underfoot conditions are generally excellent, utilizing well-maintained estate tracks and clear hill paths. However, the high plateaus feature extensive boulder fields, particularly on Derry Cairngorm, and the final summit of Beinn Mheadhoin requires a short scramble. The return leg down Glen Derry involves crossing the Glas Allt Mor, which lacks a bridge and can become impassable and highly dangerous during periods of heavy rain or snowmelt.
