Route overview

This classic horseshoe high above Glen Shiel links three Munros in an enjoyable high-level circuit. Starting with an excellent stalkers' path up Càrn Ghluasaid, the route traverses scenic ridges to the commanding peak of Sgùrr nan Conbhairean and the grassy plateau of Sàil Chaorainn. The return offers a fine ridge descent before a pathless, rougher finish.

Terrain and underfoot

The ascent uses a well-graded, dry stalkers' path with stony zigzags, leading to broad, stony mountain ridges. Underfoot conditions are generally good on the high crests, though the plateau sections can be bouldery. The descent from Meall Breac is much rougher, pathless, and tussocky, requiring careful navigation down steep slopes to cross the Allt Coire nan Clach, which may be difficult to cross in spate.
