Càrn a' Mhàim

Càrn a' Mhaim from the Linn of Dee

Route overview

This classic Cairngorms outing approaches the long, elegant ridge of Càrn a'Mhaim via the scenic pine woods of Glen Lui. Starting from the Linn of Dee, the route offers a lengthy but gentle approach before a steady climb reveals magnificent views across the Lairig Ghru to the giant peaks of Càrn Toul and Ben Macdui.

Terrain and underfoot

The approach follows excellent estate tracks and well-maintained footpaths through Glen Lui, with some boggy ground near Derry Lodge. The ascent uses a clear, reconstructed hill path that becomes steep and stony on the upper slopes. Crossing the Luibeg Burn is straightforward in normal conditions but requires a short upstream detour to a footbridge if the water is high or in spate.
