This classic circuit offers an exceptional introduction to the Cairngorms, skirting the dramatic rims of Coire an Lochain and Coire an t-Sneachda before reaching the summit of Cairn Gorm. Starting from the high ski centre car park, the route provides quick access to magnificent cliff scenery and expansive plateau views, returning via the Ptarmigan station.
Terrain and underfoot
Underfoot, the route follows well-constructed mountain paths for the majority of the circuit, though some sections on the high plateau are pathless and stony. Navigation requires care in poor visibility due to proximity to steep cliffs. The descent from the Ptarmigan station is on a broad, gravelled path.

Route overview
This classic Cairngorms circuit offers an exciting, hands-on ascent of Cairn Gorm via the famous Fiacaill Ridge. Starting from the ski centre, the route climbs a dramatic rocky crest before traversing the high, cliff-fringed plateau of Cairn Lochan and Stob Coire an t-Sneachda. It provides a superb, direct mountain experience with magnificent views over the northern corries.
Terrain and underfoot
The route features well-defined paths, rough boulder fields, and a sustained section of grade 1 scrambling on the Fiacaill Ridge, where difficulties can be bypassed on the right. The high plateau is highly exposed, requiring careful navigation in poor visibility, especially near steep corrie rims. Descent is via a steep, pitched path and a broad gravel track through the ski area.

Route overview
This classic loop traverses the high Cairngorm plateau to visit the two highest summits in the range. Starting from the high ski centre, the trail climbs past dramatic northern corries to reach the vast, arctic-like plateau of Ben Macdui before returning over the prominent peak of Cairn Gorm. It offers an immersive experience of Britain's premier mountain plateau.
Terrain and underfoot
The route follows well-constructed paths on the initial approach and final descent, but the high plateau sections are characterised by stony, indistinct trails and boulder fields. Navigation is highly demanding in poor visibility due to the vast, featureless terrain and proximity to vertical cliffs.
