White Mounth from Auchallater
Route overview
A long, open round onto the White Mounth plateau from Glen Callater, taking Carn an t-Sagairt Mor, Cairn Bannoch and Broad Cairn. The approach up the glen to Loch Callater is gentle and gives the day an unhurried shape; above it the route crosses high, rolling Cairngorm plateau with the cliffs above Dubh Loch not far to the north. Distance rather than steepness is what makes this a full day.
Terrain and underfoot
An estate track carries the long walk up Glen Callater, and the rest is on path, so the going is good throughout. The only sustained climb comes between seven and nine kilometres, onto the plateau. Once up, the route stays between roughly 950 and 1040 metres for around ten kilometres of broad, stony, heathery ground. The plateau is exposed and offers little shelter, and navigation matters in poor visibility.

Both routes start at Auchallater, south of Callater Burn bridge, grid NO155881. Keep the entrance and central aisle clear.
