Route overview
This superb circular route approaches the vast Cairngorm plateau through the ancient Caledonian pines of Rothiemurchus Forest. Ascending via the dramatic ridge of Sron na Lairig, it reaches the high, cliff-bound summit of Braeriach before descending into the dramatic trench of Gleann Einich, offering a quieter and highly scenic alternative to the standard approach.
Terrain and underfoot
The route uses well-constructed forest tracks and clear paths for the approach and initial climb. The high plateau requires keen navigation, particularly in poor visibility, while the descent into Gleann Einich follows a rougher, eroding stalkers' path with steep, heathery sections. A key river crossing at the Beanaidh Bheag can require wading and becomes entirely impassable during periods of heavy spate.

Whitewell, Braeriach via Glen Einich
There is limited parking before Whitewell road end, grid NH915087. It can fill in summer, so arrive early and keep road-end access clear.
A compact unmarked gravel recess beside the track, partly screened by vegetation.

- The Barn Café at Rothiemurchus opens daily from 09:30 to 16:30, with the farm shop open from 09:45 to 17:00.
