Route overview

This superb horseshoe traverse offers a rugged, high-quality alternative to the standard route up Mull's sole Munro. Ascending via the undulating ridge of Beinn Fhada, the route crosses the dramatic, narrow crest of A' Chioch before a steep, rocky scramble leads to the summit of Ben More, offering expansive island and sea views.

Terrain and underfoot

The route features a mix of boggy lower moorland, faint hill paths, and rugged, rocky ridges. It involves exposed, straightforward scrambling on the narrow crest of A' Chioch and a very steep, loose final ascent to Ben More where route-finding on scree is tricky. The descent follows a stony path, becoming boggy on the lower slopes.

Route overview

This direct out-and-back route ascends the only Munro on the Isle of Mull. Starting from the shores of Loch na Keal, the trail follows a prominent burn before climbing steadily up the northwest ridge to the summit. It offers a straightforward line of ascent with exceptional coastal and island views, making it a highly popular and rewarding island excursion.

Terrain and underfoot

The lower sections follow a clear but occasionally boggy path alongside the Abhainn Dhiseig. Higher up, the terrain becomes increasingly steep, rough, and eroded, transitioning to loose stones and scree. The final pull to the summit ridge requires care on loose ground, though the path is marked by small cairns. Navigation is generally straightforward in clear weather, but the upper slopes can be disorientating in mist.
