Route overview

As Scotland's southernmost Munro, Ben Lomond offers an exceptionally popular climb with superb views over Loch Lomond and its islands. Rising directly from the loch shores at Rowardennan, the peak is typically climbed via a well-constructed tourist path, but returning over the rugged Ptarmigan ridge creates a more varied and satisfying circular outing.

Terrain and underfoot

The ascent follows a highly developed, clear path that climbs steadily through woodland and open hillside. The optional descent via the Ptarmigan ridge is significantly rougher, narrower, and steeper, with rocky steps that require care. Navigation is straightforward in clear conditions, but the upper slopes can be exposed to severe weather, and the rocky descent becomes slick when wet.
