Route overview

Ben Hope is the most northerly Munro, rising as an isolated, prominent peak above the vast peatlands of Sutherland. This direct out-and-back route offers a relatively short but steep climb. The reward is an outstanding panoramic view stretching across the northern flow country to the dramatic coastline and the open sea beyond.

Terrain and underfoot

The route follows a clear, eroded path that is steep, rocky, and often wet underfoot, particularly in the lower sections alongside the Allt a' Mhuiseil. After a flatter grassy terrace, the path ascends the broad southern ridge via steep zig-zags. Navigation is straightforward in clear conditions, but the summit plateau terminates abruptly in sheer cliffs to the north and west, requiring care in poor visibility.
