Route overview

Rising above Strath Fillan near Tyndrum, Ben Challum offers a straightforward out-and-back outing. The route climbs steadily up the broad southern ridge, passing a minor south top before reaching the main summit. It provides excellent, expansive views over the southern Highlands, particularly towards the Crianlarich hills, making it a popular and accessible single-Munro day.

Terrain and underfoot

The lower slopes are notoriously boggy, with faint, muddy paths navigating wet ground and fence lines. Higher up, the terrain improves to a firmer, grassy ridge with a clearer path. The ascent is sustained but technically straightforward, though the final ridge between the south top and the main summit narrows slightly and requires careful navigation around a distinct cleft, particularly in poor visibility.
