Route overview

This exceptionally long out-and-back route approaches the vast Cairngorms plateau from the north, starting near Tomintoul. It features a lengthy, scenic approach through the wooded glen of Strath Avon before ascending onto the high, rolling plateau of Ben Avon. The final objective is the massive, distinctive granite tor of Leabaidh an Daimh Bhuidhe, which marks the summit.

Terrain and underfoot

The initial approach follows excellent estate tracks and a private tarred road along the glen floor. A steady, steep climb on a stalker's path leads onto the high ridge, where the path eventually fades. The high plateau is pathless, requiring competent navigation in poor visibility. Underfoot terrain is mostly grassy slopes and stony tundra, culminating in a short, straightforward scramble to reach the top of the summit tor.

Route overview

This exceptionally long but rewarding out-and-back route approaches Ben Avon, one of the Cairngorms' giant eastern plateaux, via the scenic Gleann an-Slugain. Starting from Keiloch, the walk transitions from pleasant pine woodlands and the enchanting 'Fairy Glen' to a vast, high-altitude plateau. The summit is uniquely crowned by a massive granite tor, offering a distinctive and memorable mountaineering finish.

Terrain and underfoot

The approach follows excellent estate tracks and well-maintained paths through the glen. The final ascent to the high pass of The Sneck and onto the plateau becomes significantly steeper and rougher underfoot. Once on the vast, exposed plateau, navigation is highly challenging in poor visibility. Reaching the true summit atop the giant granite tor requires a short, straightforward scramble with minimal exposure in calm conditions.
