Route overview
An outstanding Torridon outing, this route traverses the elegant quartzite ridge of Beinn Liath Mhor. Starting from Achnashellach, the walk uses excellent historic stalkers' paths to access the high country before embarking on a rugged, stony ridge traverse. The mountain's distinctive white quartzite scree and terraces offer superb views of neighbouring Sgorr Ruadh and Liathach.
Terrain and underfoot
The approach and return utilize high-quality, well-graded stalkers' paths. Once on the mountain, the terrain becomes significantly rougher, characterised by steep, eroded paths, extensive quartzite scree, and boulder fields that are slippery when wet. The descent from the western end of the ridge is particularly complex, requiring careful navigation through steep sandstone slabs, crags, and a rocky gully with minor scrambling.
