Creag Mhòr (Glen Lochay) · Beinn Heasgarnich

Creag Mhòr and Beinn Heasgarnich

Route overview

This is a substantial and varied horseshoe outing in Perthshire, linking the craggy, well-defined peak of Creag Mhòr with the sprawling, high-plateau mass of Beinn Heasgarnich. Starting from Glen Lochay, the route transitions from quiet hydro tracks to steep, pathless ridges and vast, boggy high-altitude terrain, offering a rewarding challenge for experienced hillwalkers seeking a quieter, more rugged day out.

Terrain and underfoot

The route features a mix of tarmac, hydro tracks, and pathless, rough mountain terrain. The ascent of Creag Mhòr is steep and craggy, requiring careful route-finding through broken cliffs. In contrast, Beinn Heasgarnich is characterised by broad, featureless grassy ridges and extensive, complex peat bogs. Navigation is highly demanding in poor visibility. The descent crosses the Allt Tarsuinn, which can become impassable during spate conditions, requiring an early crossing to the south bank.
