Beinn Bhreac · Beinn a' Chaorainn (Cairngorms)
Beinn a' Chaorainn and Beinn Bhreac
Route overview
This long but rewarding Cairngorms outing pairs two quieter Munros via the scenic pinewoods of Glen Lui and Glen Derry. Starting with a flat approach to Derry Lodge, the route climbs onto the vast, rolling plateau of the Moine Bhealaidh. It offers a sense of spaciousness and superb views across the high Cairngorm giants, returning via the historic Lairig an Laoigh pass.
Terrain and underfoot
The approach uses excellent, flat estate tracks, highly suited for cycling to Derry Lodge. On the hills, the terrain transitions to faint, boggy paths and trackless peat hags across the high plateau, where navigation becomes highly demanding in poor visibility. The descent from Beinn a' Chaorainn is very steep. Crucially, the crossing of the Glas Allt Mor on the return can become impassable during periods of heavy rain.
