This longer but rewarding outing climbs the vast eastern Cairngorm giant of Beinn a' Bhùird from the south. Starting with a scenic walk through the ancient pine forests of Glen Quoich, the route ascends a restored path to reach an expansive, high-altitude stony plateau. The dramatic eastern corries and cliffs provide a spectacular contrast to the gentle approach.
Terrain and underfoot
The approach follows excellent estate tracks through Glen Quoich before transitioning to a well-constructed, restored path climbing to the ridge of An Diollaid. Higher up, the terrain becomes a stony, windswept plateau where navigation is highly demanding in poor visibility. A key river crossing at the Allt an Dubh-Ghleann requires wading under normal conditions and becomes entirely impassable during periods of heavy rain or snowmelt.
